The researchers used polymerase chain reaction, virus isolation and sequencing to study the genetics and biological properties of AOAV-16. All virus isolates were determined to be low-virulent for chickens, with the exception of one strain, which was detected together with the avian influenza virus.
The discovery showed that AOAV-16 has at least four different types of intergenic sequences between HN and L gene junctions and recombination events, as well as interspecific transmission by wild migratory birds. The research results imply potential threats of AOAV-16 to commercial poultry and the need for strict control measures to limit contact between wild migratory birds and domestic poultry.
