The specialists of the Rosselkhoznadzor subordinate FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” have made considerable progress in developing new sample preparation methods for whole genome sequencing of animal viruses.
Methodical guidelines for purification, concentration and extraction of genomes of ASF virus and pathogens belonging to the genus Capripoxirus for whole genome sequencing were developed in the first quarter of 2024. For implementation of these guidelines, genomic DNA sample preparation procedures were improved and new ones were developed using Illumina/MGI technologies.
The novel approaches allow for the preparation of highly purified material for whole genome analysis. This, in its turn, makes it possible to obtain more reliable data on genetic relationship between the field isolates of the causative agents of highly dangerous animal infections.
The developed methodical guidelines are already being used actively by the FGBI “ARRIAH” specialists and can be introduced into research laboratory practice, provided that qualified personnel and relevant high technology equipment are available.
These novel approaches to sample preparation open up new opportunities for more accurate and effective analysis of animal virus genomes. This, in turn, will contribute to more efficient measures aimed at infection control and animal health protection.
