In December 2025, scientists from the FGBI "ARRIAH" completed the development of Russia's first national standard regulating various methods for the microbiological testing of animal feed.
GOST R 72491 "Animal feeds, feed additives, and raw materials for feed production. Methods of microbiological testing" was approved by order of the Rosstandart of December 29, 2025, and will come into force on May 1, 2026.
Until now, Russia lacked a unified regulatory document establishing requirements for the microbiological testing of feed. Laboratories in their work relied on various methods, including separate interstate and foreign standards, as well as internal laboratory regulations, which hindered the comparability and reliability of results.
The new GOST contains algorithms for the detection and identification of bacteria from the genera Salmonella, Escherichia, Proteus, and toxigenic Clostridium, utilizing modern selective and differential diagnostic techniques, molecular biological methods, test kits, and analyzers. This enhances the accuracy of research and reduces associated economic costs.
The standard was developed as part of the scientific research work "Development of a set of methods for ensuring food and biological safety" and will serve to unify laboratory testing, improve the reliability of results, and strengthen state control in the feed production sector.
The introduction of GOST R 72491 will mark an important step towards strengthening the biological safety and sustainability of animal husbandry in the Russian Federation.
