On August 7, the FGBI “ARRIAH” celebrates its 68th anniversary.

The Centre’s history began on August 7, 1958, when the All‑Union Foot‑and‑Mouth Disease Research Institute was established following a resolution of the CPSU Central Committee and the USSR Council of Ministers. The scientists were tasked with a critical state objective—to protect the country from foot‑and‑mouth disease, one of the most dangerous livestock diseases.

It was here that the first domestically produced diagnostic tools and vaccines against foot‑and‑mouth disease were developed, laying the scientific foundation for Russia’s system of combating highly dangerous animal infections.

Over decades of work, the Centre has significantly expanded its areas of activity. Today, the FGBI “ARRIAH” is one of Russia’s largest research and production centers in veterinary medicine, biotechnology, as well as food and biological safety. Its structure includes an extensive network of branches and testing laboratories, providing veterinary testing and support across many regions of the country. The Centre develops vaccines, diagnostic products, test systems, modern test methods, and implements innovative solutions for the agro‑industrial sector.

Over the years of its operation, the Centre’s specialists have created more than 200 veterinary products. FGBI “ARRIAH” products are in demand not only in Russia but are also exported to dozens of countries worldwide.

The high level of research is confirmed by international recognition. The FGBI “ARRIAH” serves as a Reference Centre for the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and is also included in the United Nations registry of analytical laboratories for the investigation into alleged chemical, biological, or toxin weapons use.

For 68 years, the Centre has remained true to its core mission—advancing Russian veterinary science, protecting animal health, ensuring the quality and safety of animal products, and strengthening Russia’s biological safety.
