On July 6, 2026, scientists at the FGBI “ARRIAH” started preclinical and clinical trials of Russia’s first domestic vaccines designed to protect parrots and other ornamental birds against highly dangerous infectious diseases.

The Centre's specialists are currently developing four distinct products: two live vaccines and two inactivated vaccines against Newcastle disease and high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5N1). These vaccines are intended for a broad range of ornamental birds, including all species of parrots and finches, as well as corvids.

At this stage, the vaccines are undergoing tests for safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy under conditions that closely replicate their field application.

To facilitate these trials, the FGBI “ARRIAH” has partnered with one of the leading veterinary clinics specializing in the treatment of ornamental birds. This collaboration will allow for the collection of reliable data on the efficacy of the vaccines across diverse bird species. It will also help determine optimal immunization schedules tailored to their specific biological characteristics, age, and physiological state.

Developing the country's first domestic vaccines for parrots and other ornamental birds will ensure their protection against highly dangerous diseases. Furthermore, the availability of Russian vaccines will serve as a critical factor streamlining the issuance of veterinary accompanying documents required for the movement of birds outside the Russian Federation.

FGBI “ARRIAH” scientists plan to finish the development of the vaccines and prepare them for registration in 2027.
