ARRIAH Takes Part in Scientific Conference on Global Rabies Elimination Strategy

On September 28, 2026, representatives of the FGBI "ARRIAH," subordinate to the Rosselkhoznadzor, took part in a scientific and practical conference dedicated to World Rabies Day in the Russian Federation, organized by the Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology – MVA named after K.I. Skryabin.

The event brought together representatives of international organizations such as FAO and WOAH, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, leading research centers of the country, and medical and veterinary universities.

Elena Chernyshova, Head of the Reference Laboratory for Rabies and BSE, Candidate of Science (Veterinary Medicine), delivered a report at the conference, presenting information on the institute's research and practical work in the prevention and control of rabies. In her presentation, she noted that the FGBI "ARRIAH" is the Rosselkhoznadzor's leading research center for the diagnosis and control of this disease. The institute's scientists conduct large-scale research on virus isolates obtained in the Russian Federation, develop and produce vaccines and test kits, and also train specialists from Russian and foreign laboratories. In addition, the institute coordinates the implementation of measures to combat rabies in CIS countries.

The speaker reported that specialists of the FGBI "ARRIAH" have developed and introduced a unique method for analyzing the anti-rabies status of wild animals in the oral vaccination zone. It allows for the rapid assessment of immunity against rabies in wild and stray animals and has no analogues in Russia. The scientists have also created a test kit for detecting a fragment of the rabies virus genome using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, which has complemented the gold standard of disease diagnosis.

Currently, the institute's portfolio includes 3 vaccines against rabies — for dogs, cats, and farm animals, including cattle and small ruminants, pigs, horses, and camels.

In addition, the Reference Laboratory for Rabies and BSE is one of two laboratories in Russia authorized to conduct diagnostic testing for the export of animals to EU countries, China, and the USA.

In conclusion, Elena Chernyshova emphasized that rabies control requires a systematic approach — from laboratory testing and vaccination to international exchange of experience. The FGBI "ARRIAH" plays a key role in this process, providing the scientific basis and developing practical tools for disease control.
