The epidemic situation on highly pathogenic avian influenza remains tense in many regions of the world. From the beginning of 2015 disease outbreaks were registered in flocks of poultry and populations of wild birds in 33 countries of Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America. Influenza virus H5N1, detected in territories of 24 countries, as well as related viruses of subtypes H5N8, H5N2, H5N6 were most widely spread. The epidemic potential of the disease spread in the territories of Egypt (1,086 cases), China (913), USA (265) and Korea (162) and detection of different highly virulent viruses in Canada, USA, China, Vietnam and other countries give rise to concerns of the Veterinary Service of Russia. Caused by influenza virus subtype H7 highly pathogenic avian influenza was detected in Germany, Great Britain, Mexico. The total number of dead and slaughtered birds accounted for more than 34 mln.
In March-April 2015 the circulation of virus H5N1 was detected in the population of Dalmatian pelicans (Pelecanus crispus) in Bulgaria, Romania and later in Russia (Astrakhan Oblast). Kazakhstan notified the OIE on May 2015 about a case of virus subtype H5N1detection in dead pelicans in the reserve of Guryev city. In May 2015 virus H5N1 was confirmed in populations of wild birds in territories of Tibet and Inner Mongolia (China) and later in the Republic of Tyva, Zabaykalsky Krai and Novosibirsk Oblast of Russia and it could be associated with mass migration of birds from Asia to breeding grounds in Siberia. No cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza were registered in flocks of poultry in Russia in 2015. At present there is a threat of virus introduction into the territory of Russia and the disease spread by wild migratory birds.
