Epidemic situation on animal highly dangerous diseases worldwide in June 2014

According to information of the World Organisation for Animal Health 130 outbreaks of animal highly dangerous diseases were registered in June 2014 in previously disease-affected countries and 64 outbreaks were reported from previously disease-free states.

For example, seven outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) were registered in Russia. Three foci of infection were confirmed in the Kaluga Oblast: one focus in the settlement of Kolodez of the Spas-Demensky Rayon, one focus in the settlement of Klyuchy of the Spas-Demensky Rayon and one focus in the village of Trosti of the Zhukovsky Rayon. The Belgorod Oblast (Glukhovka, Alexeyevsky Rayon), the Volgograd Oblast (Kondrash, Ilovlinsky Rayon), the Tver Oblast (Gorbunovo, Kashinsky Rayon), the Smolensk Oblast (Vskhody, Ugransky Rayon) reported about one outbreak each. Two outbreaks were also registered in Poland.

Apart from ASF, five foot and mouth disease outbreaks were registered in Russia in June in the following settlements of the Spassky Rayon, Primorsky Krai: Staryy Klyuch, Zelenodolskoye, Spassk-Dalnyy, Voskresenka and Spasskoye. Foot and mouth disease was reported from territories of Tunis (30 outbreaks) and Botswana (1 outbreak).

The Taiwanese Veterinary Service informed about six rabies outbreaks. One focus of Newcastle disease was registered in Israel and one focus of the same disease was reported from Sweden. Classical swine fever was officially confirmed in Columbia (3 outbreaks) and Latvia (2 outbreaks). Twenty-five outbreaks of lumpy skin disease were registered in Turkey.

Five foci of peste des petits ruminants were registered in the territory China. The Veterinary Service of Greece informed about 23 outbreaks of serotype 4 bluetongue. Vesicular stomatitis was confirmed in the USA (5 foci). African swine fever was reported from Swaziland (2 outbreaks) and RSA (7 outbreaks).

During June one outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome (Qatar), Q-fever (South Korea), bovine enzootic leucosis (Germany) was registered. The RSA Veterinary Service informed about 2 outbreaks of low pathogenic avian influenza. Four Newcastle disease outbreaks were reported from Algeria.

Highly dangerous animal and avian diseases were registered for the first time in the following countries: Latvia – African swine fever (3 outbreaks), Rumania – bovine spongiform encephalopathy (1 outbreak), Iran – lumpy skin disease (1 outbreak), Kuwait - Middle East respiratory syndrome (2 outbreaks), Norway – rabbit hemorrhagic disease (1 outbreak), Dominican Republic and Columbia – swine epizootic diarrhea (7 and 45 outbreaks, respectively).
