In April 2018 Chief Expert of the Rosselkhoznadzor-subordinate FGBI "Federal Center for Animal Health ", Doctor of Science (Veterinary Medicine) V.N. Irza participated in the 1st research coordination meeting on avian influenza viruses in wild bird populations in South Korea, Mongolia and Russia, organized by Konkuk University (Seoul, South Korea) involving the National Institute for Environmental Research, and made a presentation on avian influenza surveillance in wild bird populations in Russia.

At the meeting the possibility of cooperation between the scientific institutions of the countries participating in the study of the ecology of influenza viruses in wild bird populations, as well as organization of joint expeditions were discussed. The participants expressed their willingness to establish scientific cooperation in this field.

While visiting the laboratory for avian diseases, a high level of activities, equipment and qualification of the personnel was noted. Advanced scientific developments for molecular research are actively implemented in the laboratory, for example, portable sequencers and PCR devices for working in the field, as well as methods for bird species identification based on feces testing (barcoding), which does not require capture or shooting of wild birds. Cooperation with Korean, Mongolian and Russian scientists is expected to facilitate progress in this field.
