On September 26-28, 2019 the third meeting within the framework of the PPR Regional Roadmap for the member-countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) took place in Tashkent, the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The event was organized with the assistance of FAO and OIE experts: dr. Jean-Jacques Soula (PPR secretariat), dr. Bona Diop (FAO Consultant), dr. Anna-Maria Baka (OIE Standard Department),dr. Giancarlo Ferrari (expert OIE), dr. Budimir Plavsic (OIE regional representative for Europe) and dr. Mereke Taitubayev (OIE subregional representative for Central Asia). The Chief Veterinary Officers (OIE Delegates) and Heads of veterinary laboratories of the ECO member-countries and Republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan attended the meeting. The Russian Federation representative was invited to the meeting as an observer.
The representatives of each country gave presentations where they highlighted the progress achieved following the 2nd meeting of PPR Regional Roadmap related to the implementation of the PPR Global Eradication Programme at the national level.
Researcher of the Information and Analysis Centre Spiridonov Artyom represented the Rosselkhoznadzor subordinate FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” and made a report on “PPR situation in the Russian Federation”. Dr. Bona Diop and dr. Anna-Maria Baka expressed interest in the report, as the presented information indicated that the country had an opportunity to apply to the OIE for official recognition of the historical freedom of the country from PPR.
The meeting of the ECO member-countries representatives was constructive. The opportunity of development and approval of national PPR eradication plans in the countries (if it is not available), the feasibility of vaccination, supervision and application of PPR monitoring and assessment tool (PMAT) were discussed. Target dates on PPR eradication program implementation and further aspects of cooperation between the ECO member-countries were scheduled as a working plan for the countries for 2019-2021.
The next meeting will be held in 2021 in the Republic of Turkey.
