Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly dangerous contagious animal viral disease. The Russian Federation has been historically free from this infection, but the pathogen circulation and sporadic outbreaks of the disease have been reported in the countries of Central Asia. That poses threat of PPR introduction into the territory of the Russian Federation and requires development of effective and reliable methods for the disease diagnosis and control.
In case of PPR suspicion, the final diagnosis is established only if the presence of the pathogen or its genome in samples collected from the suspected animals is confirmed by laboratory diagnostic tests. Thus, correct sampling of biological material is the first stage of laboratory tests and plays a crucial role in obtaining correct results.
“The Guidelines for biological material sampling for PPR diagnosis”, developed by the specialists of the FGBI Federal Center for Animal Health, subordinate to Rosselkhoznadzor, are an easy-to-understand practical guide for veterinarians which can help to arrange and perform sampling for PPR laboratory diagnosis.
The Guidelines contain materials and methods for sampling biological material collected from live or dead animals, depending on the disease clinical presentation and the type of the material collected.
Besides, they provide detailed information on observing conditions ensuring the sample integrity during transportation and storage as well as packaging requirements. They also contain a list and forms of the necessary accompanying documentation, the procedure for sample reception at the laboratory, as well as methods for preparing biological material for various laboratory tests.
The developed Guidelines have been validated, approved and recommended by the Rosselkhoznadzor.
