Global Epidemic Situation on Highly Dangerous Animal Diseases in July 2014

According to the World Animal Health Organization (OIE) 428 highly dangerous animal diseases were reported all over the world in July 2014.

In Russia new African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks were reported in the following regions: Pskov Oblast – 8, Kaluga Oblast – 6, Smolensk Oblast – 4, Novgorod and Voronezh Oblasts – 2, Tula Oblast – 1. Twenty-four ASF outbreaks were reported in Latvia, 6 – in Poland, 1 – in Lithuania.

Veterinary Service of Greece notified of 182 bluetongue outbreaks. The disease is also reported in Italy (5 outbreaks). Spread of lumpy skin disease over Turkey (90 outbreaks), Egypt (6 outbreaks) and Iran (3 outbreaks) continues. 37 FMD outbreaks in Tunis were officially confirmed. China notified of 1 FMD outbreak and 1 outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza.

Taiwan again reported of 2 rabies outbreaks. Greece reported of 1 outbreak of sheep pox and West Nile fever. Veterinary Service of Bhutan officially confirmed 3 outbreaks of peste des petits ruminants. Newcastle disease outbreaks are repeatedly reported in Israel (4) and Sweden (1).

Two outbreaks of Classical swine fever were reported both in Colombia and Latvia. The disease was also confirmed by the Veterinary Service of Mongolia – 1 outbreak. Vesicular stomatitis was reported in the USA – 22 outbreaks.

Outbreaks of highly dangerous animal diseases were for the first time reported in the following countries: Bulgaria – bluetongue (1), Botswana – Rift Valley fever (1), Azerbaijan – lumpy skin disease (2). FMD outbreaks were reported in South Korea (1) and Uganda (3). One outbreak of West Nile fever, monkey pox and anthrax were reported in Croatia, Cameroun and Poland, respectively.
