A. Mischenko, Deputy Director for Scientific and Research Work and Monitoring, the FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health”, subordinate to the Rosselkhoznadzor, took part in the first meeting on the Roadmap for Development of Basic Methods for PPR Control and Eradication in Central Asian Region held on February 23-25, 2016. The following goals were set at the meeting organized by the FAO and the OIE and held in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan:
- Submit a more detailed Global Strategy for the Control and Eradication of PPR and its tools taking into account recommendations of Abidjan conference;
- Perform primary assessment of PPR situation in the countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan) and capacity of veterinary services in its control;
- Determine other diseases of small ruminants that can be controlled simultaneously with PPR.
During the meeting the countries informed about PPR epidemic situation and discussed topical issues on PPR control in these countries.
The FGBI “ARRIAH” presented the Draft Programme for PPR Progressive Control and Eradication in the Republic of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, developed on request of Veterinary Competent Authorities of these countries.
Considering scientific potential of the FGBI “ARRIAH” it was decided to develop Regional Programme for PPR Eradication in compliance with the Global Strategy for Eradication of PPR and Other Highly Dangerous Diseases of Small Ruminants in Central Asia taking into account social and economic characteristics of this region.
On the results of the meeting there was established a Regional Advisory Group on PPR, and representatives of Iran, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan were chosen as its Deputy Heads. This group will control assessment process and will render assistance in development of national strategies of the countries under the Roadmap. The countries performed primary self assessment according to the Global Strategy. The participants developed a provisional forecast on PPR eradication within next 15 years and determined measures necessary for the goal achievement.
