8643 tests of livestock sera were performed in the Reference Laboratory for FMD Diagnosis of the Rosselkhoznadzor subordinate FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” from January 18 to February 8, 2016. The tests were carried out within the framework of the Rosselkhoznadzor’s activities in the area of serological surveillance aimed at compliance with “WTO SPS Agreement on Russia’s WTO Accession for 2016”. Samples were collected from FMD vaccinated animals in a number of regions and from non-vaccinated animals in the surveillance zone.
Analysis of the test results demonstrated no FMDV antibodies in sera of animals in the zones where FMD vaccination is not practiced. 80% of immune animals were reported in population in the tested regions included in the buffer zone that is indicative of the efficient vaccination program (OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code, 2015, Article 8.8.40)
Nevertheless the level of population immunity reported in some holdings is below 80%. In view of low level of immune animals in tested population the FGBI “ARRIAH” experts suggested that possible reasons should be clarified and preventive vaccination should be mandatory and according to the scheme of vaccination and revaccination, i.e. adult cattle should be vaccinated every 6 months and young animals should be vaccinated at the age of 4-18 months old and every 3 months.
