The Rosselkhoznadzor-subordinated FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” (Vladimir) received the RF Patent No. 256547 for invention of inactivated sorbate vaccine against type A foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus. Invention is related to veterinary virology and biotechnology.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly dangerous quarantinable epidemic acute disease of cloven-hoofed animals characterized by the virus type and variant variability, high contagiousness and various transmission routes.
Wide-spread FMD occurrences as well as difficulties in diagnosis and vaccine strain matching required for anti-epidemic measures are accounted for high genome mutation variability and antigenic diversity of FMD virus. There are 7 serotypes and many subtypes of FMD virus. But there is no cross-immunity among serotypes, even within one serotype sufficient protection is not conferred. Serotype A FMD virus is highly antigenically variable.
The developed vaccine contains non-virulent and purified antigen of type A FMD 2171/Kabardino-Balkaria/2013 virus strain that belongs to the serotype A Iran-05sis-10 genetic lineage and have not occurred in the territory of the Russian Federation previously. The virus isolate was recovered from FMD outbreaks in the North Caucasian Region of the Russian Federation in 2013.
Recently, the outbreaks caused by FMD serotype A Iran-05sis-10 genetic lineage virus have been reported in Transcaucasia, Central Asia, Near and Middle East, that’s why development of the vaccine based on the said virus strain is of great practical importance for FMD control.
