At present, there are no effective methods of DVH treatment available. Live vaccines based on attenuated strains are the most effective tool for the disease specific prevention. The product quality control is carried out by challenge with control virulent DVHV strains.
Specialists of the Laboratory for Epizootology and Monitoring together with staff members of the Testing center of the FGBI "ARRIAH", subordinate to the Rosselkhoznadzor, developed Methodical guidelines for the determination of DVHV Orekh strain infectivity in 1-3-day-old ducklings.
Orekh strain is highly virulent and is used for potency testing of DVH embryo vaccine "VGNKI-K", produced by the FGBI "ARRIAH by challenging vaccinated poultry.
The method allows to obtain material with a virus titer of 6.0 lg LD50/0.5 cm3 and to preserve lethal activity (virulence) of the virus. That gives the possibility to perform appropriate control of the produced vaccine and to place a high-quality and effective biological product on the market.
For reference: Duck virus hepatitis is included into the OIE Animal Health Code list of highly dangerous infections. The economic losses result from deaths of young ducklings, reaching up to 95 %, stunting of convalescent birds and costs of veterinary-sanitary measures in infected holdings. The disease is widely spread in some European countries, as well as in many countries of the Asia-Pacific region, posing a significant risk to Russia.
